Unveiling penile Enlargement Surgery

Throughout history, the penis has defined masculinity. Discussion of the penis has been deemed taboo, socially unacceptable; and at other times, it is the topic of lighthearted conversation and jokes. Length, girth and function, however, have been an issue for men throughout history.

This is apparent in the first book of the Old Testament, Genesis, where Abraham is told, ‘Every male among you shall be circumcised. You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you. The ancient Greeks were also fixated on the penis, as recorded by Kallixeinos of Rhodes in 275 BC, who described a ‘golden phallus, 180 feet long’. The phallus was topped with a golden start and was carried through the streets during a festival in Alexandria; all the while people sung to it and recited poems.

Even today, penile size is a considerable concern and a source of anxiety for men of all ages throughout history. It has various social and psychological ramifications, such as social maladjustment, fear of relationships, and lack of self-confidence. Many men feel a need to enlarge their penis in order to improve their self-esteem, or to satisfy and impress their partners.

surgery to augment penile length and girth

In recent years, surgery to augment penile length or girth has become increasingly common, especially in private settings. Lack of standardization of this controversial procedure has led to a wide variety of poorly documented surgical techniques, with unconvincing results.

Since the early 1970s, when it was first described by child specialists in boys with micro penis (very small penis) and media attention, increased demand for cosmetic surgery, and widespread advertising have contributed to the rising popularity of penile augmentation.  Subsequently, the adult population began to show interest in the procedure for cosmetic and psychological reasons, similar to that seen with reconstructive breast surgery and augmentation. In fact, according to a survey, between 1991 and 1998, 10,000 men underwent penile surgery in the US alone. Interestingly, the main concern of the majority of men having this kind of surgery is flaccid penile size.

However, male penis enlargement surgery, also known as penile augmentation or penile enhancement surgery (like any other major surgery) is not free of side effects, risks and complications. In fact, data suggests that significant problems may occur with this type of penis enlargement procedure.

Basic types of penis enlargement surgery

Depending on the type, penis enlargement surgery is of two types i.e. one which will increase the thickness of your penis and the second that is used to increase the length.

1-Surgery to enhance thickness of the penis

This surgery involves fat cells taken from your abdomen being injected around your penis. This surgery temporarily bulks up your penis and can increase the thickness temporarily.

The biggest problem with this type of penis surgery is the fact that the transplanted fat cells feel extremely soft like women’s breasts and any increases in the thickness of your penis often disappear as soon as the fat cells are reabsorbed back into your body. Furthermore, the transplanted fat cells can sometimes re-absorb at an uneven consistency leaving your penis looking lumpy and very unattractive.

2-Surgery to enhance length of the penis

This is done by cutting the ligaments that support the penis. When these ligaments are cut, part of the large section of penile shaft usually held inside your body will drop forward. This type also results in a very small increase in the length of your erection.

In addition, some more drawbacks associated with penis enlargement surgery include:

High costs: Based on the evidence and surveys, it appears that penis surgery is not worth the $3,000 to $10,000 USD it costs for this penis enlargement procedure.

Medical complications: Like any other surgery, there is a high risk of complications such as high rate of infections (during and after hospital stay), bleeding during the surgery and damage to other important structures. Other potential dangers include a deformed looking penis, impotence, a loss of sex drive, scarring, poor circulation to your penis & testicles and possible damage to the nerves throughout your penis. In addition, penis enlargement surgery procedures may irritate the penis and cause continuous pain. It should be noted that the male sexual organs are delicate, and even the best candidate for surgery still has the potential for complications. The risks are high no matter how competent and experienced the surgeon.
Last but not least, at present, there is insufficient information to establish the safety and effectiveness of the penis enlargement surgery. Many factors should be considered when evaluating these procedures: whether or not we can really enlarge or elongate the penis; which surgeries are the most successful and why; who the patients paying thousands of dollars for extra inches on a flaccid penis are, and why they feel compelled to do so; how their surgery affects the sexuality (particularly erectile function) and self-image of the patients; and whether or not anxiety and depression levels are reduced after surgery.
